The rustic interior at The Stiffkey Red Lion.

A traditional Norfolk Pub in almost every sense of the word, from the rustic wooden pews and four log fires to the original stone floor and selection of local brews on offer, The Red Lion at Stiffkey is an uncomplicated retreat for those wishing to unwind in a relaxing atmosphere with no whistles and bells.

Centrally located on the A149 coast road, Stiffkey is easily reached from all the towns, villages and attractions that make this region special, from the chic rural hotspots of Holt and Burnham Market to the more classic seaside resorts of Sheringham, Cromer and Wells. There is a popular campsite just a stroll away and the Pub is close enough to the sea for those sitting outside to be refreshed by the sea breeze on warmer days.

In wonderful contrast, eating at The Stiffkey Red Lion is a less traditional affair. While the decor may be reassuringly simple, as you’d expect from a bona fide country alehouse, the cuisine is fresh, modern and mouth-watering. The main menu features classic dishes that take advantage of the wealth of local produce, changing regularly depending on seasonal availability. A specials board changes daily, offering a selection of more cosmopolitan dishes. There are also dishes for children and several vegetarian options.

You can choose to eat in any of the three rooms in the pub or in the conservatory or dining room. There is outside seating too if you’d prefer to dine al fresco.

Ideally situated on the North Norfolk coast (and reachable on foot from several nearby locations, including Wells-next-the-Sea), The Red Lion is the ideal stop-off for walkers, cyclists or birdwatchers. It is great for a hearty lunch, a refreshing pint of Nelson’s Revenge or an evening meal to finish off a hard day of sightseeing.

Seating at The Hunny Bell (image supplied by The Hunny Bell).

The Hunny Bell is part of the highly acclaimed family of pubs and restaurants known collectively as the ‘Animal Inns’, which count among their number two Michelin Bib Gourmand eateries in Norwich.

As with all the Animal Inns establishments, The Hunny Bell has its own unique character that has been enhanced in style and quality by its new owners. A traditional country local in the pretty Norfolk village of Hunworth, and formerly known as The Bluebell Inn, The Hunny Bell keeps true to its rural position, offering real ales (including local brews by Woodfordes among others) from a gleaming wooden bar that compliments the solid wooden fittings and furnishings throughout. The interior has been given a sympathetic twist with new upholstery and contemporary detailing to create an air of comfortable-chic.

The menu at The Hunny Bell, devised by head Chef Martin Recchi, centres on traditional dishes, made simply from local ingredients but made very, very well. Including time-honoured favourites such as Cod and Chips and Steak and Kidney Pie, the food is already considered by many to be the best served in the locale.

Under its new ownership, The Hunny Bell is still very much a country village pub at heart with a welcoming feel and uncomplicated food and drink at reasonable prices. A country village pub yes… but like a distillation of all the wonderful features of such a pub, one that would be top of its class on all fronts.

Inside The Yurt.

Camping enthusiasts will tell you that nothing compares to the experience of sleeping under canvas. But what about eating under canvas? Visit the new Yurt ‘Rustic Restaurant and Café’ at Drove Orchards in Thornham, and you can judge for yourself.

A totally unique concept in eating out, The Yurt is a large, round, semi-permanent tent with vertical walls and a conical roof. Inside you’ll find a gentle Turkish-cum-Moroccan style interior, with lamps, lanterns and low tables with reclined wicker chairs alongside more conventional blue wooden dining furniture. The atmosphere is ambient with peaceful music and no urgency to hurry. Think Very-VIP chill-out tent at Glastonbury. Imagine Kate Moss and cohorts. You get the idea.

In contrast to the décor, the menu is closer to home in its origin – delicious hot dishes, all day breakfasts and doorstep sandwiches, as well as mouth-watering cakes and puddings. Simple(ish) fare made from high quality local produce. If its simply refreshment you’re after, The Yurt does a nice selection of coffees, teas and soft drinks.

Open Mon-Weds 9am-5pm, Thurs-Sat 9am-5pm & 6pm-9pm, Sun 9am-5pm.

The Norfolk Riddle Walsingham Norfolk (Riddle seen hanging on left hand wall).

Situated in the pretty and renowned village of Little Walsingham, and associated with the nearby Walsingham Farms Shop, The Norfolk Riddle is a wonderful result of the combination of the highest quality, fresh local ingredients, friendly service, simple and delicious dishes, and relaxed ambience. In short it could be described as the ultimate ‘Norfolk’ eatery – traditional and unpretentious yet smart and exceptionally satisfying.

Head Chef Herv Stouvenel (originally from Alsace-Lorraine in France) understands farming and rural village life, and is passionate about cooking and eating seasonal produce. Herv is particularly interested in making the most of the simplest ingredients and cheaper cuts such as potatoes, belly pork and offal.

The menu changes fortnightly to reflect the seasonal bounty available and drinks include locally brewed cider and beers as well as wine and freshly pressed fruit juices. Being adjacent to the superb Norfolk Riddle Fish & Chip Shop, classic cod and chips is a specialty, but you would be equally impressed with a prime steak of Walsingham Beef or the freshly made vegetarian dish that is always on offer.

If you have room, you can treat yourself to one of the indulgent puddings, all made on the premises or in the Farms Shop kitchen.

Children and family groups are welcome, and the restaurant will happily serve as a venue (tailored menu included) for your party or celebration.

Finally… ‘What is a ‘Norfolk Riddle’?’ you may ask… well, not only a brainteaser, a ‘riddle’ is also a giant sieve used to sort potatoes, an East Anglian staple crop. Look out for these implements hanging up around the restaurant.

Restaurant closed on Mondays. Open Tue-Thur 12Noon-1.45pm & 6pm-8.45pm, Fri/Sat 12Noon-2.15pm & 6pm-9.30pm, Sun 12Noon-2.30pm & 6pm-8.30pm.

The conservatory at The Lifeboat Thornham.

The 16th Century Lifeboat Inn at Thornham is a real North-Norfolk treasure in its stunning coastal location (even the car park has a breathtaking view out onto Holme Dunes).

In addition to the cosy oil-lantern lit bar and general ambience, that remains faithful to traditional inn-keeping values, The Lifeboat is a great place to eat all year round – particularly throughout the winter months when it really is an inviting and snug bolthole.

For summer dining, there is a lovely walled patio garden, and bright conservatory, the roof of which is covered by an ancient vine that apparently thrives on Abbot Ale. For evenings and special occasions, try the more formal dining room with its welcoming traditional décor and daily-changing one rosette standard menu (3 courses for £28.50). Year-round, the reasonably priced bar menu features local delights and daily specials and is very popular in the evenings. Children’s meals are available and there are options for vegetarians.

If you’ve tried the Lifeboat and want to experience something a little different, why not try its sister Inn – The Old Coach House, which is just down the road in Thornham. Serving pizza and Pasta in rustic, informal surroundings, it is perfect for everything from a romantic meal for two to a night out with the whole family.

Relaxed, contemporary dining at Butlers of Holt.

Located in the centre of the pretty market town of Holt, which is excellent for shopping or as a base to explore the surrounding area, Butlers is equally perfect for lunching during the daytime or for evening dining.

Opened in 2005, the family-run café-bar and restaurant has gone from strength to strength, and was recently awarded an AA Rosette for culinary excellence.

The open, airy restaurant bears hallmarks of a European brasserie, with a twist of rustic Norfolk charm. Secluded outside seating is excellent for al fresco dining on warmer days, while the inside with its sloping glass roof and large double doors offers perfect protection from autumn winds and chilly winter days, while still enabling diners to ‘experience the outside in’.

Experienced Chef and owner, Sean Creasey has created a modern European menu with a leaning towards the Italian. Seasonally influenced, ingredients are sourced wherever possible from good quality local suppliers. The menus change daily to offer the best and freshest produce.

For those who are simply looking for a break from work or shopping, Butlers café is serious about its coffee and, of course, delicious cakes. Free WIFI makes Butlers the perfect escape from the office or hotel room. The large oak bar that runs the length of the room serves a good selection of wines, beers and spirits throughout the day for those looking for something a little stronger.

Perfect for morning coffee, light lunches, afternoon teas or a rest stop while out walking or cycling, Heydon Village Tea Room is no ordinary café.

The Tea Rooms are located in the charming village of Heydon, which is only 12 miles north of Norwich. Other than being very pretty, surrounded by quiet country lanes that are ideal for a bike ride, Heydon is also one of only a handful of privately owned villages in Great Britain. The last construction in the village, which has only one road in and out, was built over 100 years ago to commemorate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887.

Sympathetic in character to the bygone feel of the village, the Tea Room is a lovely place to relax and forget time for a quiet moment. Indulge in scrumptious home made cakes (the Chocolate Cake and Lemon & Lime Cake are somewhat infamous), home made soup with French bread made from real French flour or a light lunch from the specials board.

Traditional Cream Tea is available in both savoury and sweet flavours with herby cheese scones accompanied by salsa and cream cheese or spicy fruit scones with cream and jam. Scones themselves are something of a speciality at Heydon. Layer your butter and jam on delicious Lavender (made with genuine Norfolk Lavender), ginger, cinnamon and good old plain varieties.

Sit inside and enjoy the white tablecloths and real china like your Grandma used to use (sugar cube tongs included) or take your tea or coffee outside on warmer days and relax amidst the serene, slow-paced setting of Heydon Village.

Opening times:

From 1st Oct: Open Fri & Sat 10am-4p, Sun 12Noon-4pm.

Mothers Day-end Sept: Open Weds-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 12Noon-5pm. Closed Mon and Tues (except on Bank Holidays).

Lunches served 12noon-3pm.

The Tea Room can be booked for parties or functions in the evening – capacity 12-24 persons.

Illy coffee at the Garden Cafe at Cley Nurseries.

Set back on the road between Holt and Cley, Cley Nurseries and the on-site Garden Café is a delightful find if you’re looking for a peaceful experience on the North Norfolk coast.

For budding gardeners (pun intended), the family run nursery has a wide selection of plants and garden accessories, including over 40 varieties of roses and, in keeping with its Norfolk situation, a large selection of Lavenders. With plenty of advice on hand if you need it, why not treat your garden with a visit?

After browsing the nursery, or if you simply want to sit, reflect and relax, why not treat yourself with a visit to the Garden Café? Accessible to all with an available Stair Lift, the café is inviting and comfortable with a large picture window providing wonderful sea views.

The café serves Illy coffee, tea, light lunches, scones and cakes (we recommend you try the carrot cake – possibly the lightest, most moist carrot cake you’ll ever have the pleasure of sampling!).

Enjoy a slower pace for a while and take some time out at the Garden Café at Cley Nurseries.

Café closed on Mondays.

Nursery open 7 days a week.

Inside Deepdale Cafe, Norfolk.

An extremely popular haunt for locals, campers, walkers and holidaymakers alike, Deepdale Café successfully combines a relaxed vibe reminiscent of a beach-side coffee bar with the quality food and service you’d expect from a far more formal establishment.

Situated on the A149 coast road between Burnham Overy Staithe and Brancaster Staithe, among a well thought-out cluster of interesting businesses on the ‘Dalegate’ site, the café is perfectly positioned for refreshment when exploring the North Norfolk coast or surrounding villages such as the Burnhams.

Presented beautifully and cooked to order under Head Chef Rory Knowles, portions are reasonably priced and plentiful with satisfying and delicious options for breakfast, lunch and throughout the day (including veggie, children’s and diet-conscious options). The menu includes sandwiches and snacks as well as more substantial meals using a feast of local produce such as locally caught crab, lobster and mussels (when in season). Fully licensed, you can relax with an alcoholic tipple such as Adnams beer or Whin Hill Cider (from nearby Wells-next-the-Sea) or a wine or beer from further a field. For non-drinkers, children or drivers, the list of soft drinks is more than adequate, with various coffees, teas, juices and soft drinks on offer.

As well as the ‘standard’ menu, the café features changing ‘specials’ and a tempting roast on Sundays. Little wonder then that they are included in the Good Food Guide once again this year (2009).

Ideal for families, couples, the young and old, Deepdale Café is a fabulous, unpretentious eating-and-meeting place that is bound to please even the choosiest diner.

If you can’t dine in, many of Deepdale Café’s most popular dishes are available as frozen takeaways.

Deepdale Café also offers a fully equipped mobile catering service – ideal for corporate catering and film shoots etc.

Café open 7 days a week 7.30am-4pm (last orders 3.45pm).

Breakfast/Brunch served 7.30am-12noon.

Daytime menu served 12noon-3pm.
