Kitchen at Hill Cottage, Holt.

Situated within a five-minute walk of the centre of Holt, Hill Cottage is the ideal base for enjoying all the delightful shops & eateries that this charming Town has to offer. It also makes a fantastic starting point from which to explore the entire region.

Sleeping 2, the spacious yet oh-so-cosy cottage successfully combines its original warmth and character (flint walls, exposed beams – it was once a Drover’s Cottage) with contemporary country styling to create a truly atmospheric bolthole.

Downstairs you’ll find a fully fitted kitchen (including a dishwasher), a dining room that opens via French doors onto the lovely garden and a lounge complete with open fire.

Upstairs, the vaulted bedroom has a king-sized bed and an en-suite bathroom with a stunning freestanding bath.

The cottage has spacious walled gardens to the front and rear and is flanked by woodland. Such a large outside space makes the cottage ideal for dogs with well-behaved owners (prior arrangement please).

The only drawback to Hill Cottage is that, with such a romantic atmosphere within, your whole holiday could pass without you ever leaving the property. Be warned!

Ladies' handbags and boots at The Tannery.

“One good pair of shoes can change your life”, said Cinderella, and who are we to disagree. Quality footwear can ‘lift’ your entire outfit. The same can be said for accessories such as bags, gloves, purses and wallets. Buy well in any of these areas and you might also find yourself with a piece that lasts you a very long time, getting only more comfortable as time goes on. The devil is always in the detail so it’s worth getting right.

And you can’t go wrong at The Tannery in Holt. Stocking exquisitely handcrafted men’s leather shoes by Crocket & Jones, and their own label produced exclusively in Portugal. Not so much footwear as ‘art’ for the feet (and guaranteed to get a nod of approval from anyone doing a ‘head-to-toe’ sweep of your attire). We are advised that the canny shopper buys two pairs – alternating them extends their life as acid from your feet is very corrosive. Putting a shoetree in them overnight will protect their form still further.

For final finishing touches, check out the range of bags, accessories, luggage (Tusting), ties (silk) and gloves (sourced from Naples). The quality is all superior, but with many different price bands, there’s something to suit everyone.

For fine quality Ladies shoes, handbags and just about every other leather accessory you can think of, visit newly opened sister-store at 4-6 Bull Street in Holt (close to Byfords).

Once your shoes are off and bag put down at the end of a hard day, we’d recommend sinking into some divine Tusting furniture. Traditionally hand made in Lavendon, available at The Tannery.

Labels found at The Tannery include:
  • Crocket & Jones

  • Tusting

  • The Bridge

  • Orla Kiely

  • Toscanella

  • Daines & Hathaway

  • Donna Elena

  • Marlborough

  • Cottie

Bronze piece from Hatfield Hines Gallery.

The Hatfield Hines Gallery in the centre of the pretty Georgian Market Town of Holt is a veritable Aladdin’s Cave for art-lovers seeking modern British art for their own personal collection.

Founded on the leading collection of original modern British Art built up by Judy Hines since 1973, the Gallery is a key destination for sourcing 20th Century British paintings, prints and sculpture. As well as art of all styles produced between 1900 and 1980, the Gallery also holds work by selected contemporary artists such as David Baxter and Gilia Florentin-Lee. Most work is purchased direct from the artists, offering both quality and affordability.

The Gallery is now run in the main by Clare Hatfield, who was inspired to contact Hines over a decade ago after reading about her occupation dealing modern British art all over the world, and thus laying the foundations of their partnership.

With a vast range of stock to browse through at the Gallery itself (including a wide collection of original prints and etchings which can be viewed by appointment prior to them becoming available through the Gallery), it is well worth putting aside a good few hours to explore this petite – but highly-concentrated – treasure trove of art.

The ever-growing website also features hundreds of works by some 50+ artists, enabling you to browse, view and purchase in the comfort of your own home.

Open Tue-Sat 11am-5pm (Thurs 11am-2pm). Closed Monday & Sunday.

Artisan British cheeses and bottles of locally produced juices, ales and tipples at Back To The Garden, Letheringsett, Holt, Norfolk.

‘BEST FARM SHOP’ EDP Norfolk Food Awards 2009-2010.

Food doesn’t get purer or fresher than this. Back to the Garden grows their own organic fruit and vegetables, which are harvested and delivered daily to the Farm Shop, a large 18th Century barn situated beside the A148 in Letheringsett only four miles from the farm.
No chemical fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides are used on the Farm, and this non-intensive production extends to the meat, poultry and eggs. No antibiotics or growth promoters are used on the cattle and sheep (born on the Back to the Garden Land) and all poultry is organic and free to roam. Their own grass-fed organic beef is matured for at least 21 days and sold in the Butchery.
In addition to the Farm’s own produce, Back to the Garden carefully selects other high quality organic and artisan foods from sustainable sources. Organic pork comes via local farmer Peter Melchett. The delicatessen stocks British cheeses and fresh organic pasta (made on the premises, along with delicious organic sausage rolls). Where food is imported, costs to the Earth are borne in mind and Back To The Garden ensures their goods do not travel by plane.
Back to the Garden also stocks plenty of diet-busting sweet goodies, including organic, locally made chocolates and homemade pastries and cakes.
Obviously, there is a pronounced emphasis on the organic and locally produced at Back to the Garden. However, this is not the extent of the Farm Shop’s philosophy. Ultimately, everything in the shop has to be of the highest standard and taste really good. Together, these features make for a forward-thinking food-lovers dream-shopping destination.
Open Mon – Sat 9am – 5pm.
Sunday from 10.00 am – 4.00 pm.

Relaxed, contemporary dining at Butlers of Holt.

Located in the centre of the pretty market town of Holt, which is excellent for shopping or as a base to explore the surrounding area, Butlers is equally perfect for lunching during the daytime or for evening dining.

Opened in 2005, the family-run café-bar and restaurant has gone from strength to strength, and was recently awarded an AA Rosette for culinary excellence.

The open, airy restaurant bears hallmarks of a European brasserie, with a twist of rustic Norfolk charm. Secluded outside seating is excellent for al fresco dining on warmer days, while the inside with its sloping glass roof and large double doors offers perfect protection from autumn winds and chilly winter days, while still enabling diners to ‘experience the outside in’.

Experienced Chef and owner, Sean Creasey has created a modern European menu with a leaning towards the Italian. Seasonally influenced, ingredients are sourced wherever possible from good quality local suppliers. The menus change daily to offer the best and freshest produce.

For those who are simply looking for a break from work or shopping, Butlers café is serious about its coffee and, of course, delicious cakes. Free WIFI makes Butlers the perfect escape from the office or hotel room. The large oak bar that runs the length of the room serves a good selection of wines, beers and spirits throughout the day for those looking for something a little stronger.

Open Mon-Sat 8.30am-11pm.

Illy coffee at the Garden Cafe at Cley Nurseries.

Set back on the road between Holt and Cley, Cley Nurseries and the on-site Garden Café is a delightful find if you’re looking for a peaceful experience on the North Norfolk coast.

For budding gardeners (pun intended), the family run nursery has a wide selection of plants and garden accessories, including over 40 varieties of roses and, in keeping with its Norfolk situation, a large selection of Lavenders. With plenty of advice on hand if you need it, why not treat your garden with a visit?

After browsing the nursery, or if you simply want to sit, reflect and relax, why not treat yourself with a visit to the Garden Café? Accessible to all with an available Stair Lift, the café is inviting and comfortable with a large picture window providing wonderful sea views.

The café serves Illy coffee, tea, light lunches, scones and cakes (we recommend you try the carrot cake – possibly the lightest, most moist carrot cake you’ll ever have the pleasure of sampling!).

Enjoy a slower pace for a while and take some time out at the Garden Café at Cley Nurseries.

Café closed on Mondays.

Nursery open 7 days a week.
