Aspects of The Real Ale Shop, North Norfolk.

According to recent research by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), people in East Anglia are drinking more real ale than ever before. As it should be, really, given that here in Norfolk we produce excellent malting barley that is subsequently used across the UK and beyond to produce fantastic beers, lagers and ales.

One such malting barley farm is Branthill Farm near Wells-next-the-Sea, which extends to over 1000 acres on the Holkham Estate. Malting barley has been grown in the region since Shakespearian times, with the coastal microclimate and light, sandy soil over chalk combining to make it one of the best places on Earth to grow the crop.

Crushed Pale Malt - classic malt for Indian Pale Ale.

The concept seen in wine-producing countries of promoting the produce to the public at source inspired tenant Farmer Teddy Maufe to open The Real Ale Shop on-site at Branthill Farm. Now a must-visit destination for any real-ale fan in the area, The Real Ale Shop has also gone on to win several prestigious awards, including ‘Off Licence News Independent Beer Retailer of the Year 2009’ and ‘CAMRA Bottle Online Sales Awards 2008’.

The Real Ale Shop stocks bottle conditioned real ales from a host of Norfolk breweries including the Fox Brewery, Woodforde’s, the Iceni Brewery, the Humpty Dumpty Brewery and Tipple’s Brewery. Teddy believes that one advantage of such an arrangement is total traceability, an important feature with today’s savvy consumers. Apparently, one of the brewers even quotes the field grid reference on their bottle label. Presumably, using local floor maltings is also fairly ‘green’, cutting down on the mileage required in transportation and, therefore, boasting a lesser ‘Carbon Footprint’. Environmentally friendly, locally produced and flavoursome. Fabulous.

Now stocking some 50+ naturally bottle conditioned ales onsite, The Real Ale Shop has extended to the web, offering online selection and ordering. Ideal if you’re not a native, although if you can, we’d highly recommend you take the signposted detour on the Fakenham-Wells road to visit this unique off-licence in person.

Bed at The Neptune Inn.

The Neptune Restaurant with Rooms at Old Hunstanton is charming on so many levels that it would be a shame to miss out on such a treasure.

The site of ‘The Rifleman’ in the 1780’s when it was used as a store for seized contraband, it has been known as The Neptune since the 19th century. Now under the careful ownership of Kevin and Jacki Mangoelles, the Inn and Restaurant has been transformed to evoke images of the New England coast.

With nautical themes throughout, brown mellow tones and white clapboard walls, The Neptune could easily be fragranced by either home-baked apple pie or salty sea air. The Lloyd Loom sofas and chairs add to the relaxed ambience of the bar, lounge and restaurant.

True to its origin as a coaching inn, The Neptune offers elegant accommodation in 7 fabulous en-suite bedrooms, all furnished with the clean lines of white, hand made New England furniture. A 4-Star Inn (EnjoyEngland.com), you are assured a high level of hospitality at this charming bed and breakfast, which is perfectly located for easy access to the North Norfolk coast, Sandringham, the Burnhams and the wider County.

Under Head Chef Kevin, the classic-modern food at The Neptune is lovingly created from fresh local produce such as Thornham Oysters and Plums from Orchard Farm. Already a prestigious 3 AA Rosette restaurant, The Neptune has also recently been awarded a Michelin Star.

The Neptune Restaurant is open Tues-Sun (Closed Mon).

Comfortable beds at The Old Coach House Thornham.

The charming Lifeboat Inn at Thornham is a real North-Norfolk treasure. Its coastal location provides breathtaking views towards Thornham beach and it is a romantic, rustic and atmospheric escape.

From the cosy smugglers bar lit by hanging oil lanterns to the large fireplace when you first walk in (you’ll have to fight for space in front of it during the winter – often with a few dogs!), the ambience remains faithful to traditional inn-keeping values (after all, The Lifeboat has been receiving guests since the 16th century). Fantastic all year round because its situation is perfect for exploring the North Norfolk coast, as well as taking in golf at nearby Hunstanton, where the Brabazon Trophy was held in 2003. The Lifeboat comes into its own throughout the winter months when it is an inviting and snug bolthole.

For dining, there is a lovely walled patio garden and bright conservatory, the roof of which is covered by an ancient vine that apparently thrives on Abbot Ale. For evenings and special occasions, try the more formal dining room with its welcoming traditional décor and daily-changing one rosette standard menu (3 courses for £28.50). Year-round, the reasonably priced bar menu features local delights and daily specials and is very popular in the evenings. Children’s meals are available and there are options for vegetarians.

The Lifeboat bar is popular and often bustling into the evening – a perfect retreat to recover from walks along the beach or from exploring the area.

The Lifeboat, and its nearby sister Inn, The Old Coach House, offer comfortable and traditional bed and breakfast (all rooms en-suite) from around £50 pppn (£60 Fri, Sat and Bank Holiday Sundays). Offers and special deals are available for 3-night stays and throughout January and February.

Dogs are welcome (£5 per stay) and extra beds can be provided for Children.

Please ask about the special Midweek Dinner, B&B Break.

Walsingham Farms Shop Walsingham Norfolk.

Located in Walsingham, famed for its association with the historic Slipper Chapel and the Holy Mile, Walsingham Farms Shop was established by an innovative partnership between the Walsingham Estate, its tenant farmers and other local producers to deliver a fresh (pun intended!) approach to food shopping.

Walsingham Farms Shop exists to offer ‘fair trade’ to Norfolk growers, enabling them to achieve prices which reflect the true value of food, and to allow shoppers to gain direct access to the finest, freshest local produce.

The Farms Shop stocks the best in Norfolk’s fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs and salad. You can buy staples such as potatoes, onions and carrots all year round, while the availability of treats such as broad beans and butternut squash is dictated by the seasons (as it should be perhaps?).

Meat is sourced direct from local producers and reared to the highest welfare standards. It is then prepared in-house by the Farms Shop’s own butcher and can be cut to your exact requirements. Perfectly matured beef is available alongside pork, lamb, game in season and the Farms Shop’s own sausages and burgers.

Pies, pasties and quiches are baked on the premises, while locally baked cakes are just like Granny used to make. Add to this a fine selection of Norfolk cheeses, smoked fish from the Cley smokehouse, locally brewed beers, wines by Satchells of Burnham Market and so much more that we cannot possibly mention it all here – you’ll just have to see for yourself. Walsingham Farms Shop represents an exciting new direction in food shopping that is achieved by returning to basic principles of quality, service and the support of local producers.

Open Tues-Fri 9am – 6pm, Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 9am-1pm. Closed on Mondays.

Drove Orchards Farm Shop - The Best In Local Produce. Open Daily 9am-5pm.

The Jamieson family has lived at Drove House since 1920, and planted their first apple tree in 1952. They are still farming this beautiful forty-acre orchard. Apples and pears that were once supplied to supermarkets are now sold exclusively through their family run Farm Shop and juiced on site to produce the extensive range of Drove Orchards juices.

Over the years production has grown to include pears, quinces, plums, bumper crops of soft fruits such as strawberries and raspberries, lesser-known berries such as josta berries and over 50 varieties of seasonal herbs, salad and vegetables that are sold through the Farm Shop within minutes of being hand cut (and sell out just as quickly!).

This family run farm has expanded over the years with great care taken to protect the wide variety of birds and animals that have made Drove Orchards their home.  A new orchard of heritage East Anglian fruits has recently been planted.

There’s a great atmosphere at Drove Orchards with extensive Pick your Own fields, the Yurt Restaurant specialising in seasonal, local foods, a vintage home and garden shop, a boat cover maker, a weekend fishmonger and of course its’ own Farm Shop that sells dishes produced onsite from local ingredients, as well as selling and supporting local producers of cheese, organic meats and bread.

From June right through to the end of October, the Pick Your Own fields are heaving with seasonal fruits, there is a family nature trail, gorgeous wildlife and as much food and drink as you can manage. A trip to Drove Orchards is a must if you’re up in north Norfolk and the whole team promise a warm, Norfolk welcome!

Artisan British cheeses and bottles of locally produced juices, ales and tipples at Back To The Garden, Letheringsett, Holt, Norfolk.

‘BEST FARM SHOP’ EDP Norfolk Food Awards 2009-2010.

Food doesn’t get purer or fresher than this. Back to the Garden grows their own organic fruit and vegetables, which are harvested and delivered daily to the Farm Shop, a large 18th Century barn situated beside the A148 in Letheringsett only four miles from the farm.
No chemical fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides are used on the Farm, and this non-intensive production extends to the meat, poultry and eggs. No antibiotics or growth promoters are used on the cattle and sheep (born on the Back to the Garden Land) and all poultry is organic and free to roam. Their own grass-fed organic beef is matured for at least 21 days and sold in the Butchery.
In addition to the Farm’s own produce, Back to the Garden carefully selects other high quality organic and artisan foods from sustainable sources. Organic pork comes via local farmer Peter Melchett. The delicatessen stocks British cheeses and fresh organic pasta (made on the premises, along with delicious organic sausage rolls). Where food is imported, costs to the Earth are borne in mind and Back To The Garden ensures their goods do not travel by plane.
Back to the Garden also stocks plenty of diet-busting sweet goodies, including organic, locally made chocolates and homemade pastries and cakes.
Obviously, there is a pronounced emphasis on the organic and locally produced at Back to the Garden. However, this is not the extent of the Farm Shop’s philosophy. Ultimately, everything in the shop has to be of the highest standard and taste really good. Together, these features make for a forward-thinking food-lovers dream-shopping destination.

The rustic interior at The Stiffkey Red Lion.

A traditional Norfolk Pub in almost every sense of the word, from the rustic wooden pews and four log fires to the original stone floor and selection of local brews on offer, The Red Lion at Stiffkey is an uncomplicated retreat for those wishing to unwind in a relaxing atmosphere with no whistles and bells.

Centrally located on the A149 coast road, Stiffkey is easily reached from all the towns, villages and attractions that make this region special, from the chic rural hotspots of Holt and Burnham Market to the more classic seaside resorts of Sheringham, Cromer and Wells. There is a popular campsite just a stroll away and the Pub is close enough to the sea for those sitting outside to be refreshed by the sea breeze on warmer days.

In wonderful contrast, eating at The Stiffkey Red Lion is a less traditional affair. While the decor may be reassuringly simple, as you’d expect from a bona fide country alehouse, the cuisine is fresh, modern and mouth-watering. The main menu features classic dishes that take advantage of the wealth of local produce, changing regularly depending on seasonal availability. A specials board changes daily, offering a selection of more cosmopolitan dishes. There are also dishes for children and several vegetarian options.

You can choose to eat in any of the three rooms in the pub or in the conservatory or dining room. There is outside seating too if you’d prefer to dine al fresco.

Ideally situated on the North Norfolk coast (and reachable on foot from several nearby locations, including Wells-next-the-Sea), The Red Lion is the ideal stop-off for walkers, cyclists or birdwatchers. It is great for a hearty lunch, a refreshing pint of Nelson’s Revenge or an evening meal to finish off a hard day of sightseeing.

Seating at The Hunny Bell (image supplied by The Hunny Bell).

The Hunny Bell is part of the highly acclaimed family of pubs and restaurants known collectively as the ‘Animal Inns’, which count among their number two Michelin Bib Gourmand eateries in Norwich.

As with all the Animal Inns establishments, The Hunny Bell has its own unique character that has been enhanced in style and quality by its new owners. A traditional country local in the pretty Norfolk village of Hunworth, and formerly known as The Bluebell Inn, The Hunny Bell keeps true to its rural position, offering real ales (including local brews by Woodfordes among others) from a gleaming wooden bar that compliments the solid wooden fittings and furnishings throughout. The interior has been given a sympathetic twist with new upholstery and contemporary detailing to create an air of comfortable-chic.

The menu at The Hunny Bell, devised by head Chef Martin Recchi, centres on traditional dishes, made simply from local ingredients but made very, very well. Including time-honoured favourites such as Cod and Chips and Steak and Kidney Pie, the food is already considered by many to be the best served in the locale.

Under its new ownership, The Hunny Bell is still very much a country village pub at heart with a welcoming feel and uncomplicated food and drink at reasonable prices. A country village pub yes… but like a distillation of all the wonderful features of such a pub, one that would be top of its class on all fronts.

Open:
Mon-Sat 11.30am-3pm (food served 12noon-2.15pm), 5.30pm-11pm (food served 6pm-9pm).

Example of food and drink found at The Globe Inn.

Minutes from Wells beach and overlooking the village green, The Globe Inn is the perfect place to refresh and re-nourish after a hard day of building sandcastles, shopping in Wells or exploring the surrounding area.

Renovated in award-winning style by the Holkham estate in the summer of 2005, The Globe retains all the warmth of a traditional British pub, whilst radiating an unpretentious, easy kind of class at the same time.

Pop in for a pint (The Globe stocks a range of ales from local brewers Adnams and Woodfordes) and a light snack or bed in for the afternoon in the comfortable restaurant or sunny courtyard and enjoy a full-blown meal made up from the freshest seasonal local produce. The Globe describes its menu as “traditional modern British pub-food that reflects the area our young chefs live and work in”.

Children and those with special dietary requirements are catered for and there is a small dining room available for private parties up to 20 people.

Food is served from 12noon until 2.30pm and 6pm until 9pm (7pm-9pm during low and mid season), Monday to Sunday. The BBQ is available lunchtimes and evenings, weather permitting.

Dogs are allowed in the bar, but not in the restaurant or rooms.

As well as the menu and daily changing specials The Globe also offers a Sunday roast.

Inside The Yurt.

Camping enthusiasts will tell you that nothing compares to the experience of sleeping under canvas. But what about eating under canvas? Visit the new Yurt ‘Rustic Restaurant and Café’ at Drove Orchards in Thornham, and you can judge for yourself.

A totally unique concept in eating out, The Yurt is a large, round, semi-permanent tent with vertical walls and a conical roof. Inside you’ll find a gentle Turkish-cum-Moroccan style interior, with lamps, lanterns and low tables with reclined wicker chairs alongside more conventional blue wooden dining furniture. The atmosphere is ambient with peaceful music and no urgency to hurry. Think Very-VIP chill-out tent at Glastonbury. Imagine Kate Moss and cohorts. You get the idea.

In contrast to the décor, the menu is closer to home in its origin – delicious hot dishes, all day breakfasts and doorstep sandwiches, as well as mouth-watering cakes and puddings. Simple(ish) fare made from high quality local produce. If its simply refreshment you’re after, The Yurt does a nice selection of coffees, teas and soft drinks.

Open Mon-Weds 9am-5pm, Thurs-Sat 9am-5pm & 6pm-9pm, Sun 9am-5pm.
