Garden at Montague House. The Gold Suite at Montague House. Garden at Montague House B&B.

When fabulous boutique Bed & Breakfast, Montague House opened in Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast, the glamour rating increased dramatically. Now well-established and going from strength to gorgeous strength, the high quality experience and exquisite attention to detail show no signs of abating.

Location-wise, the Sheringham B&B competes with the best holiday lets and hotels, being only a 5-minute walk from the town centre, the railway station and the beach. It is also close to Sheringham Golf Course. Step inside though, and you’re in for a treat that is delightfully atypical of the usual seaside accommodation. In fact, if it weren’t for the fresh sea air, and aforementioned proximity to the Norfolk coast, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in some slickly designed London bolthole.

Everything is designed to ensure your break away is as relaxing and memorable as possible. Upon arrival, you’re treated to tea and homemade cake in the gorgeous dining room (or your own room if you prefer). During the summer months, Friday night arrivals can enjoy Pimms on the terrace (weather permitting!).

Three individually styled en-suite rooms (The Pink Room, The Garden Room and The Gold Suite) offer luxury and quirkiness in equal measure, with unbelievably comfy beds, sumptuous bedding, original artwork and antique furniture.

The Gold Suite is a whopping 27-feet of space to unwind and incorporates a dressing room, four posted bed and lounging area. As well as an en-suite with power shower, there is also a generous tub.

Each room features a flat screen TV, hairdryers, complimentary individual bottles of wine, chocolates by the Norfolk Truffle Company and bathroom products from Aroma Natural (who also customised bespoke scents for each of the rooms – HOW fabulous?!).

Along with all the above, there is free WiFi throughout Montague House, complimentary Hildon Water daily and His and Hers bikes to borrow (free of charge but on a first-come-first-served basis). DVDs are available to borrow for use in the Gold and Garden rooms and the Gold room has an iPod docking station so you can enjoy your own holiday playlist while away. Perfect.

Breakfast is a feast of local produce that incorporates free range and organic choices whenever possible as well as seasonal specialties. Veggies will find plenty to sate them with a fabulous selection of vegetarian breakfast options. View a Typical Breakfast Menu (though there is nothing ‘typical’ about breakfast at this particular B&B… fabulous, maybe…) and sample Vegetarian Breakfast Choices.

Along with the glorious interior, unparalleled breakfasts and swathe of extras, Montague House offers a Picnic Hamper service. Given 48 hours notice, you can order a delicious Mediterranean-, English- or Seafood-themed picnic to take out and about while you explore North Norfolk. Inspired.

Room rates – held with no increase for 2012 – are from £100.00 for the Gold Suite or from £80.00 per room for the Pink and Garden Rooms depending on season (please note that there is a 2-night minimum stay in high season).

Montague House cannot accommodate children or pets.

Collection from Norwich International Airport or Sheringham Station can be arranged free of charge if required.

Room at The Old Coach House.

Despite its name, this former coaching inn on the North Norfolk coast is not all it seems… Multifaceted, this particular hostelry combines a charming country pub with a rather swish Italian restaurant and comfortable country inn accommodation.

The rooms have been simply and tastefully styled to enhance the natural charm of the building with reassuring warmth – perfect after a day of sightseeing, walking, cycling or splashing in the sea.

All rooms have double beds, some of which can be converted to offer twin accommodation, and a Family Room has a double bed with a set of bunks in an attached annex. A cot is available for very young guests.

In keeping with the welcoming allure of The Old Coach House (everyone seems welcome, and refreshingly, everyone seems accommodated), dogs are also welcome at a small supplement of £10 each.

To set you up for the day ahead, choose the hearty English breakfast or help yourself to the Breakfast Buffet.

For lunch or your evening meal, you don’t have to venture far either – The Old Coach House has two bars complete with sink-into-sofas and local ales and a bright, open restaurant offering homemade pies, pizza and pasta dishes.

Tariffs from £80 per night, including a full English breakfast.

Dogs are welcome – £10 each.

Extra beds for children can be provided at a cost of £25 per night. There is no charge for children in cots.

Under new management since June 2011, The Black Lion Hotel in Walsingham has several hundred years experience of offering hospitality fit for a King (the northern end of The Black Lion was built to accommodate King Edward III, who made regular pilgrimages to Walsingham).

Nowadays, The Black Lion Hotel has 7 smartly styled en-suite bedrooms and a restaurant that is elegant without being unnecessary. Being a former hostelry, the atmosphere is one of a dining pub with character that has been subtly modernised, where appropriate, to suit most tastes.

Contrary to its ancient origins, The Black Lion Restaurant is nothing but modern with its food and drink selection. Chef Greg Haye’s daily-changing menu features fresh, seasonal goodies sourced from local farmers, fishermen and producers.

As well as a hearty all-day breakfast, and tasty A la Carte menu, you’ll also find all-day Tapas (we love this little cosmopolitan twist in such a traditional and historic setting!). Marvelously, the entire menu is very reasonably priced, with a 4 course set price from the A la Carte menu totaling £19.50 and Tapas options between £1 and £2.50 a dish.

Standout choices (when available) are the Crispy Squid, Breaded Cheese & Honey and Spicy Pork Belly Tapas.

Drinks-wise, The Black Lion has a well-stocked bar that serves good coffee, hot chocolate and herbal teas as well as a wide range of alcoholic tipples. Hot Chocolate Fondant is a specialty, and well worth the 15 minute wait it takes to prepare it.

For sweet-tooths and nibbles, The Black Lion kitchen makes its own cakes and buns, potato and parsnip crisps, pork scratchings and covered nuts.

Food is available all day on Sundays, when a regularly changing roast is also on offer within a 2-course, 3-course or 4-course option (with coffee and handmade chocolates).

The Black Lion holds regular events, including a quiz on Sunday nights (more details below).

Room in The Lifeboat.

Now part of Marco Pierre Whites Wheeler’s family, the charming Lifeboat Inn at Thornham is a real North Norfolk treasure. Its coastal location provides breathtaking views towards Thornham beach and it is a romantic, rustic and atmospheric escape.

From the cosy smugglers bar lit by hanging oil lanterns to the large fireplace when you first walk in (you’ll have to fight for space in front of it during the winter – often with a few dogs!), the ambience remains faithful to traditional inn-keeping values (after all, The Lifeboat has been receiving guests since the 16th century). Fantastic all year round because its situation is perfect for exploring the North Norfolk coast, as well as taking in golf at nearby Hunstanton, The Lifeboat comes into its own throughout the winter months when it is a snug and inviting bolthole.

All 13 rooms are en-suite, and some offer stunning views over the marshes and Thornham Harbour to the sea.

For dining, there is a lovely walled patio garden and bright conservatory, as well as a more formal dining room. Year-round, the reasonably priced bar menu features local delights and daily specials. Children’s meals are available and there are options for vegetarians.

The Lifeboat bar is popular and often bustling into the evening – a perfect retreat to recover from walks along the beach or from exploring the area.

Tariffs start at £80 for a single room and £120 for a double/twin room, including a full English breakfast. See all 2012 Tariff information.

Dogs are welcome (£8 per dog) and extra beds or cots can be provided for Children.

Outside image of The Black Lion Hotel.

Under new management since June 2011, The Black Lion Hotel in Walsingham is one of the most fascinating places you could stay, not only in Norfolk, but also in the entire Country.

A hostelry to medieval pilgrims since the 1300s, and one of the oldest houses in Walsingham, The Black Lion is steeped in history, and, subsequently has an alluring atmosphere to match.

Nowadays, The Black Lion Hotel has 7 smartly styled en-suite bedrooms, including one with a 4-Poster Super King bed. All the rooms are unique in their layout and all possess different striking features. Some feature handmade beds, while 3 are walled with the original medieval stone walls, which are wonderfully exposed. Some offer views out onto the Market Place, once a weekly market held by Franciscan Friars from the nearby Priory.

Throughout the hotel you will encounter wonderful architectural details that bear out the hotel’s rich and long history; timber framing and delightful stone detailing is abound.

The northern end of The Black Lion was built to accommodate King Edward III (1327-1377), who made regular pilgrimages to Walsingham. The hotel is actually named after the coat of arms of his wife, Queen Phillipa of Hainault, which was a black lion.

As well as offering a totally matchless experience in terms of accommodation, The Black Lion has a rather formidable restaurant offering all day breakfast, Tapas and A la Carte.

The Black Lion holds regular events, including a quiz on Sunday nights.

Room rates range from £75 a night for a twin or double room to £120 for the 4 Poster Super king room.

Breakfast table at Field House B&B, Hindringham, Norfolk.

Field House luxury Bed & Breakfast is a gem of a B&B for so many reasons…

Firstly, its location in the sleepy, rural village of Hindringham is perfect for access to mid- and north-Norfolk, the City of Norwich, and everything in between. It is an ideal base for walkers, birdwatchers or those steeling away for a break in Norfolk, and also perfect for a romantic escape from Norwich or environs if you live here. If you’re planning on visiting Thursford for the Christmas Spectacular, then Field House is literally on the doorstep.

Second, Field House is multi-award winning and can boast (though it is modestly proud, rather than being ‘brash’ about its numerous accolades), among others, being a AA 5 Yellow Stars Highly Commended Guesthouse (the top award from the AA), receiving a Breakfast Award from the AA as well as being one of the first B&Bs to receive the recently introduced VisitEngland Breakfast Award, being holder of the English Tourism Council ‘Gold Award’, being an English Tourism 5 diamond Guesthouse…. you get the idea!

Finally, and this is the reason why Field House has received so many awards, is the extremely high quality of not only the guest house and rooms itself, but also the warm hospitality of The Doltons, who own it. The three rooms are beautifully decorated in a chic but homely style, with superb fixtures, fittings and facilities (including flat-screen TV, DVD player, mini-fridge). Lavender Cottage is a highlight in many respects, being a secluded apartment that is separate from the main house (and accessible to wheelchairs due to its ground floor location). Breakfasts are top quality, prepared with fresh, locally produced ingredients and include delights such as the ‘Norfolk Platter’, local sea-lavender honey with toast and buttermilk blueberry pancakes. Wendy even operates a ‘turn down’ service (the practice of folding back the blanket and sheet of the bed each day so you can just slide in and drift off to dreamland, usually only practised in the finest hotels).

The Sunday Times remarked, “The Doltons should be hired by the government to run a Bed and Breakfast academy”. It’s easy to see why…

Tariffs start at £45 – £55 per person per night.

The Long House at Cley Windmill.

Cley Windmill is arguably one of the most distinctive and delightful attractions that Norfolk has to offer.

Featured in The Independent Top 50 British Hotels 2010, it combines the novelty and character of a beautiful early 18th Century windmill (in a fantastic North Norfolk coast location), with slickly designed interiors and locally sourced cuisine. Quite a package wouldn’t you say?

Accommodation is offered in two forms – Bed & Breakfast and Self-Catering.

The rooms inside the windmill itself are all unique in layout and feel, depending upon their situation within the mill. For example, the cosy and traditional Wheat Chamber (a beamed, circular room) is the first of the rooms in the tower, offering superb views across the river Glaven. The Miller’s Room, occupied by the last Miller and his Wife, has its own lobby and private entrance. The Stone Room features a dramatically high ceiling and a private doorway that offers access onto the balcony that encircles the windmill. At the very top, the fabulous Wheel Room can only be accessed by a steep carpeted ladder, or can be taken along with The Stone Room to form a unique ‘suite for the adventurous’ at the very top of the windmill.

The Long House and The Boat House offer B&B accommodation outside the mill itself. Ideal hideaways, they all offer the same fabulous fittings and views as the rooms inside the Mill.

Also external to the Mill itself, The Dovecote is a snug flint-walled cottage. It can be occupied on either a B&B or a Self-Catering basis and allows dogs.

Aside from the wonderful rooms, relaxation and comfort are provided via a magnificent circular sitting room (complete with antique furniture, inviting sofas, roaring fire and honesty bar) and a stunning beamed dining room (that also serves dinner).

Extraordinary and romantic, a stay at Cley Windmill is something you will remember always. Definitely an experience of a lifetime that everyone should try at least once.

The entire Mill can be hired on a self-Catering basis over Christmas and New Year.

Cley Windmill is licensed for civil ceremonies and weddings and the entire windmill can be occupied afterward for the wedding and reception. It is an unforgettable and stunning venue for a small romantic wedding (also more than perfect for the honeymoon!). View the 2011 Cley Windmill Wedding Brochure.

Tariffs begin at £89 pp pn (minimum 2 nights stay), but book promptly as Cley Windmill’s rooms are in high demand.

4 star Guest Accommodation.Panoramic view from the 'Four-Poster' room.Breakfast Award.

As the name suggests, this fabulous 4-star B&B on the North Norfolk Coast is housed within the former Custom House. Built in 1560, it was from here that the authorities attempted to rein in the activities of smugglers and pirates (most of whom were busy frequenting The Royal Standard Inn, which is now a Chandlery and just next door!).

As if that weren’t historically important enough in itself, the garden boasts one of the only remaining original spring wells that gave Wells (later Wells-next-the-Sea) its name.

The Old Custom House has three lovely en-suite rooms, all unique and furnished to an exceptional standard. Each has digital TV, WI-FI, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer and plenty of books and magazines to make you feel at home.

Additionally, the lavish ‘Four-poster’ Room has a King-sized four-poster bed and fantastic views out onto the quay and beyond.

The ‘Captain’s Quarters’ (once the Customs Office) is a King-sized double with its own spacious private bathroom. East- and West-facing windows offer lovely views over the creeks and marshes towards the sunrise (if you’re up early enough!) and along cobblestone cottages with pantile roofs, respectively.

The ‘Queen’s Warehouse’ twin room is conveniently located on the ground floor and has its own access straight to the front yard. This makes it ideal for wheelchair users. More a ‘suite’ than a ‘regular’ room, The Queen’s Warehouse also features a dining area with fridge, sink and microwave and a bathroom with a large shower cubicle. Pets with well-behaved owners are also welcome in this room.

Off-road parking is available.

As if the history, location (as beside the sea as you can get without waking with wet feet) and views aren’t enough to tempt you into visiting The Old Custom House, they also have the coveted Breakfast Award (enjoyEngland.com), a testament to the tremendous breakfasts, cooked to order from local produce. It really is a very, very special B&B.

Featured in The Good Hotel Guide 2011, The Neptune Restaurant with Rooms at Old Hunstanton is charming on so many levels that it would be a shame to miss out on such a treasure.

The site of ‘The Rifleman’ in the 1780’s when it was used as a store for seized contraband, it has been known as The Neptune since the 19th century. Now under the careful ownership of Kevin and Jacki Mangoelles, the Inn and Restaurant has been transformed to evoke images of the New England coast.

With nautical themes throughout, brown mellow tones and white clapboard walls, The Neptune could easily be fragranced by either home-baked apple pie or salty sea air. The Lloyd Loom sofas and chairs add to the relaxed ambience of the bar, lounge and restaurant.

True to its origin as a coaching inn, The Neptune offers elegant accommodation in 6 fabulous en-suite bedrooms, all furnished with the clean lines of white, hand made New England furniture. A 4-Star Inn (EnjoyEngland.com), you are assured a high level of hospitality at this charming bed and breakfast, which is perfectly located for easy access to the North Norfolk coast, Sandringham, the Burnhams and the wider County.

Table set for breakfast at Old Town Hall House B&B.

Old Town Hall House is an AA 5-Star rated Bed and Breakfast in the charming North Norfolk coastal village of Cley-next-the-Sea. While this guarantees the obvious high standards of hospitality and furnishings, this top-level accolade also recognises that such a B&B goes above and beyond when it comes to the finer details that make a stay there simply fabulous. As well as a heightened sensitivity to guests’ needs, with nothing being too much trouble, breakfast itself must include special or home-made components, made from high-quality fresh, local ingredients. Certainly all this is evident at Old Town Hall House.

Each of the three gorgeous en-suite rooms – wonderfully called The Star Room (a King-sized double with an amazing view out on to Cley Marshes), The Globe Room (also a King) and The Heart Room (a Super-King size double), have touches such as jugs of filtered water (more eco-friendly than bottled water), mini-fridges for fresh milk with your tea or coffee, bathrobes, handmade toiletries and a tasty little ‘treat’ placed everyday that may be a cake or delicious biscuits. Intended to be a haven of peace and quiet, you will not find a TV or Wi-Fi in the rooms. The emphasis is on a technology-free stay to help you unwind (and Cley has a notoriously bad mobile signal, so that’s out too). Radios in each room provide a sedate, low-level connection to the 21st-Century.

Awarded the prestigious AA Breakfast Award, breakfast is a relaxed but special affair, including homemade bread and preserves.

Ideal as a base from which to discover the wider county, Old Town Hall House is unquestionably a Bed and Breakfast of the highest standard. Owners Louise and Fraser have made sure that nothing is overlooked and with an emphasis on high quality and guest satisfaction, a stay here is bound to leave you feeling thoroughly spoiled and rested.

Minimum stay is 2 nights. Rates range from £90-£105 per room per night. To reward their loyalty, returning guests receive a little extra-special treatment, including complimentary snacks and red wine (white also available!) in their room.

In the interest of quiet and calm, Old Town Hall House does not take children or pets.

Reassuring, traditional ambience inside Bluestone Farm B&B.

Bluestone Farm B&B offers a truly rustic escape for those looking to reconnect with the great outdoors, while retreating each night to reassuringly high quality quarters.

Set on a traditional working farm in the pretty village of South Creake in North Norfolk (just a short drive from the Burnhams, Holt and the coast), Bluestone Farm offers four large, recently renovated en-suite bedrooms (three doubles and one twin). Each oozes character, being furnished with antiques and decorated in keeping with the age and character of the house. All have wonderful views of the gardens, paddock and countryside as well as all necessary creature comforts for a relaxing home-away-from-home stay.

Speaking of paddocks… Some of the features bound to appeal to horse owners are the excellent stabling/paddock, DIY livery, good access and parking for lorries and trailers. With Holkham beach and the International Equestrian Centre at Burnham Market being within easy reach, it makes the ideal stopover for touring horses and their riders.

Those interested in other outdoor pursuits will not be disappointed. 12 miles of green country lanes surround the farm itself and there are local opportunities for shooting, golf, walking, sailing, bird watching and cycling (as well as some great places to eat, drink and shop!). Dogs are welcome in the flat.

A traditional farmhouse breakfast will set you up for the day ahead. How you choose to fill it after that is up to you…

Payment by cheque or cash only please (no cards). Please call to enquire about Bluestone Farm or to book.
