Aspects of Montague House. The beginning of April 2010 saw the glamour rating in Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast increase dramatically with the opening of fabulous boutique Bed & Breakfast, Montague House.

The Garden Room at Montague House.Location-wise, the B&B competes with the best holiday lets and hotels, being only a 5-minute walk from the town centre, the railway station and the beach. Step inside though, and you’re in for a treat that is delightfully atypical of the usual seaside accommodation. In fact, if it weren’t for the fresh sea air, and aforementioned proximity to the Norfolk coast, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in some slickly designed London bolthole.

Three individually styled en-suite rooms (The Pink Room, The Garden Room and The Gold Suite) offer luxury and quirkiness in equal measure, with sumptuous bedding, original artwork and antique furniture.

The Gold Suite is a whopping 27-feet of space to unwind and incorporates a dressing room, four posted bed and lounging area. As well as an en-suite with power shower, there is also a generous tub.

En-suite bathroom at Montague House.

Each room features a flat screen TV, complimentary fruit bowls, chocolates by the Norfolk Truffle Company and bathroom products from Aroma Natural (who also customised bespoke scents for each of the rooms – HOW fabulous?!).

Rose display in Montague House.

In preparation for the warmer months, owners Fiona and Tom Carville have remodelled the garden and are adding a patio, which will enable guests to take breakfast alfresco-style outside. (Fiona, who’s attention to detail and eye for style commendable, tells us she has even stocked up on some gorgeous new glass plates purely for the purpose of dining in the morning sunshine).

Breakfast is very special too – a well-conceived feast of local produce that incorporates free range and organic choices whenever possible as well as seasonal specialties. Right now the abundance of fresh asparagus sees Asparagus Benedict and Asparagus Frittata included on the menu. As we move into what Fiona calls ‘berry season’, berry compotes and lots of delicious smoothies will start to make an appearance.

Throughout the Cromer and Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival (May 21st-23rd), Fiona and Tom will be offering their guests crab and lobster items for breakfast including Lobster Benedict and Crab & Sweet Corn Fritters. Though they are not licensed to sell champagne, they encourage their guests to bring their own, which they are more than happy to chill for them. What better way to start a fabulous day, or a fabulous holiday…?

Bed at The Neptune Inn.

The Neptune Restaurant with Rooms at Old Hunstanton is charming on so many levels that it would be a shame to miss out on such a treasure.

The site of ‘The Rifleman’ in the 1780’s when it was used as a store for seized contraband, it has been known as The Neptune since the 19th century. Now under the careful ownership of Kevin and Jacki Mangoelles, the Inn and Restaurant has been transformed to evoke images of the New England coast.

With nautical themes throughout, brown mellow tones and white clapboard walls, The Neptune could easily be fragranced by either home-baked apple pie or salty sea air. The Lloyd Loom sofas and chairs add to the relaxed ambience of the bar, lounge and restaurant.

True to its origin as a coaching inn, The Neptune offers elegant accommodation in 7 fabulous en-suite bedrooms, all furnished with the clean lines of white, hand made New England furniture. A 4-Star Inn (EnjoyEngland.com), you are assured a high level of hospitality at this charming bed and breakfast, which is perfectly located for easy access to the North Norfolk coast, Sandringham, the Burnhams and the wider County.

Under Head Chef Kevin, the classic-modern food at The Neptune is lovingly created from fresh local produce such as Thornham Oysters and Plums from Orchard Farm. Already a prestigious 3 AA Rosette restaurant, The Neptune has also recently been awarded a Michelin Star.

The Neptune Restaurant is open Tues-Sun (Closed Mon).

Transformed by the owners of the warm and comfortable Briarfields Hotel, The Lodge is a delightful pub with a restaurant and rooms, of a quality usually only found at a stylish, designer inner-City hotel. A Dower House in the early 1800’s and The Lodge Hotel from 1912, the listed building offers a lovely mix of the old and the new, with wooden floors and real ales sitting happily alongside new world wines and the latest technology.

Situated in the attractive costal village of Old Hunstanton, The Lodge is only 400 hundred yards from quiet sandy beaches, and just along the road from some of Norfolk’s best golf courses, including Old Hunstanton and the Royal and West Norfolk at Brancaster.

The Lodge has fifteen freshly-refurbished en-suite rooms, along with two suites on the top floor.

The ground floor hosts a spacious open bar and lounge area (complete with oversized, flat-screen TV and comfy leather sofas) and a contemporary-styled restaurant that serves the highest quality locally sourced ingredients in its selection of mouth-watering dishes.

Perfect as a base for exploring North Norfolk, or as a rest stop for lunch and refreshments, The Lodge offers a warm welcome all day and is well worth a visit to experience its laid-back charm and hospitality.

Don’t just take our word for it – The Lodge is proud to hold 4-Star Silver status (EnjoyEngland) and 4-Star Inn With Rooms (AA).

Comfortable beds at The Old Coach House Thornham.

The charming Lifeboat Inn at Thornham is a real North-Norfolk treasure. Its coastal location provides breathtaking views towards Thornham beach and it is a romantic, rustic and atmospheric escape.

From the cosy smugglers bar lit by hanging oil lanterns to the large fireplace when you first walk in (you’ll have to fight for space in front of it during the winter – often with a few dogs!), the ambience remains faithful to traditional inn-keeping values (after all, The Lifeboat has been receiving guests since the 16th century). Fantastic all year round because its situation is perfect for exploring the North Norfolk coast, as well as taking in golf at nearby Hunstanton, where the Brabazon Trophy was held in 2003. The Lifeboat comes into its own throughout the winter months when it is an inviting and snug bolthole.

For dining, there is a lovely walled patio garden and bright conservatory, the roof of which is covered by an ancient vine that apparently thrives on Abbot Ale. For evenings and special occasions, try the more formal dining room with its welcoming traditional décor and daily-changing one rosette standard menu (3 courses for £28.50). Year-round, the reasonably priced bar menu features local delights and daily specials and is very popular in the evenings. Children’s meals are available and there are options for vegetarians.

The Lifeboat bar is popular and often bustling into the evening – a perfect retreat to recover from walks along the beach or from exploring the area.

The Lifeboat, and its nearby sister Inn, The Old Coach House, offer comfortable and traditional bed and breakfast (all rooms en-suite) from around £50 pppn (£60 Fri, Sat and Bank Holiday Sundays). Offers and special deals are available for 3-night stays and throughout January and February.

Dogs are welcome (£5 per stay) and extra beds can be provided for Children.

Inside one of the rooms at the Stiffkey Red Lion, Stiffkey, Norfolk.

On first impressions, The Red Lion at Stiffkey is a traditional Norfolk Pub in almost every sense of the word, from the rustic wooden pews and four log fires to the original stone floor and selection of local brews on offer. However, since the 1st May 2008, this popular refreshment stop for walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers has seen the addition of 10 fabulous rooms, making it one of the most special places to stay near the North Norfolk Coast.

Modern, chalet-style rooms (5 on the ground floor with a small terrace and garden area outside and 5 on the first floor, each with a private balcony) offer luxurious hotel accommodation at a location that is perfect for discovering the entire North Norfolk region. Well-equipped with en-suite bathroom, high quality furnishings and details like flat-screen televisions, there are 6 King-Sized Double rooms, 3 Twin rooms and a Family Double room with sofa bed. There is WIFI Internet access in the adjacent pub (along with great food all day long and a refreshing pint or glass of something cold), but this will be accessible in the rooms shortly.

The first floor rooms have amazing views out over the Stiffkey valley and the hills beyond.

The accommodation building is eco friendly, with a sedum roof that not only ensures the rooms are warm in winter and naturally cool in summer, but also collects and recycles rainwater, using it to flush the toilets. All the rooms are ultra-insulated – there are no fewer than 14 layers of insulation between the ground floor rooms and the first floor rooms, ensuring total peace and privacy if you so desire it.

Room tariffs between £80 and £120 depending on room type, season and whether you want to include a delicious dinner. All room tariffs include a full English breakfast.

Looking in to one of the rooms at The Old Coach House.

Despite its name, this former Coaching Inn on the North Norfolk Coast is not all it seems… Multifaceted, this particular hostelry combines a charming country pub with a rather swish Italian restaurant and comfortable country Inn accommodation.

The rooms have been simply and tastefully styled to enhance the natural charm of the building with reassuring warmth – perfect after a day of sightseeing, walking, cycling or splashing in the sea.

All rooms have double beds, some of which can be converted to offer twin accommodation, and a Family Room has a double bed with a set of bunks in an attached annex. A cot is available for very young guests.

In keeping with the welcoming allure of The Old Coach House (everyone seems welcome, and refreshingly, everyone seems accommodated), dogs are also welcome at a small supplement.

To set you up for the day ahead, choose the hearty English breakfast or select from the Breakfast Buffet.

For lunch or your evening meal, you don’t have to venture far either – The Old Coach House has two bars complete with sink-into-sofas and local ales and a bright, open restaurant offering homemade pies, pizza and pasta dishes.

Tariffs from £47-£77 per person per night, including a full English breakfast.

The aptly named Homestead sleeps up to 6 in 3 very comfortable, individually styled double bedrooms. Inviting and rustic, you’ll feel like you’ve come home from the first moment you step inside. Equipped to the highest standard, with a large pine farmhouse table for mealtimes, a wood burner for the winter and a paved seating area and large garden to the rear, the Homestead welcomes well-behaved children and dogs (by arrangement – please enquire first!), and is the perfect base for exploring the beauty of North Norfolk, Norwich and beyond.

Perhaps the only downside of these exclusive holiday retreats is their popularity – book early to avoid disappointment!

Frontage of Flint Cottage, Sheringham, Norfolk.

Latest News: Jan 2010. Both Flint Cottage & Stone House awarded 4-Star rating (Self-Catering Accommodation) by the English Tourism Council (EnjoyEngland.com).

Situated in the heart of Sheringham, one of North Norfolk’s most established seaside holiday towns, Flint Cottage and Stone House are just a short walk from each other, making them ideal for large groups or families. Both decorated and equipped to a high standard, they offer lovely above-average self-catering accommodation on the Norfolk coast.

Flint Cottage, a sympathetically modernised Victorian semi-detached cottage located just off the main street, sleeps 5 in 3 bedrooms (one double, one twin, one single). It has a large garden, making it ideal for dogs, which are welcome by prior arrangement at no extra charge.

Stone House is a quirky modern property with lots of character. Arranged over three floors, it boasts tasteful styling and unusual shaped rooms. Plenty of space and windows mean this cottage is light and airy throughout – perfect for experiencing the salty sea air! Stone House also sleeps 5 in 3 bedrooms (a Master double, a double & a large single).

Tariffs range from £295 – £595 pw.

Please call or visit the Flint Holiday Cottages website for further information.

“The house is very welcoming, we would definitely recommend to family and friends – it has the ‘WOW’ factor in holiday homes and we have been to a few!” Mrs A, Windamere, June 2010.

Reassuring, traditional ambience inside Bluestone Farm B&B.

Bluestone Farm B&B offers a truly rustic escape for those looking to reconnect with the great outdoors, while retreating each night to reassuringly high quality quarters.

Set on a traditional working farm in the pretty village of South Creake in North Norfolk (just a short drive from the Burnhams, Holt and the coast), Bluestone Farm offers four large, recently renovated en-suite bedrooms (three doubles and one twin). Each oozes character, being furnished with antiques and decorated in keeping with the age and character of the house. All have wonderful views of the gardens, paddock and countryside as well as all necessary creature comforts for a relaxing home-away-from-home stay.

Speaking of paddocks… Some of the features bound to appeal to horse owners are the excellent stabling/paddock, DIY livery, good access and parking for lorries and trailers. With Holkham beach and the International Equestrian Centre at Burnham Market being within easy reach, it makes the ideal stopover for touring horses and their riders.

Those interested in other outdoor pursuits will not be disappointed. 12 miles of green country lanes surround the farm itself and there are local opportunities for shooting, golf, walking, sailing, bird watching and cycling (as well as some great places to eat, drink and shop!). Dogs are welcome in the flat.

A traditional farmhouse breakfast will set you up for the day ahead. How you choose to fill it after that is up to you…

Payment by cheque or cash only please (no cards). Please call to enquire about Bluestone Farm or to book.

Discovering the chickens!

The aim of Paul and Sarah Hughes, owners of Bay Tree Cottage, is to provide friendly and comfortable accommodation, which combines high quality with great value for money.

The family home is found in the friendly and unpretentious market town of Fakenham and makes a great base for exploring the whole of North Norfolk.  Cyclists, birdwatchers, walkers, sailors and photographers all enjoy the area and many return again and again.  Paul and Sarah are or have been active in all those hobbies and would be happy to advise newer visitors – there are plenty of guidebooks and maps for you to borrow.

Guests at Bay Tree Cottage have a well-appointed en-suite room, with a TV, DVD player and radio, as well as tea and coffee-making facilities.  The room is quiet and overlooks the pretty garden to the countryside beyond.

Ideal for families, a second room is available for children.  This has twin beds and a cot for a baby or toddler (Paul and Sarah can often baby-sit by arrangement – a real luxury as most parents will appreciate!).

Rates are £60 per night for the en-suite room and £25 for the children’s room, with reductions for single occupancy.  These rates include a full English or continental breakfast.

Evening meals are available upon arrangement.
