Situated on East Quay in Wells-next-the-Sea, Standard House Chandlery has a long tradition of catering to the needs of sailor-types. As The Standard Inn during the 1700s, a young Nelson sat and watched sailors performing shanties and generally discussing all things nautical, an experience that can only have helped him find his own ‘sea legs’ only a few years later.
Doubling as the first rural post office in Norfolk, and located on the then-busy sea-going harbour of Wells, it must have been quite a lively place.
Nowadays, Wells Harbour is more famed for its visual appeal than its functionality. It is lovely to sit on the quay and watch the yachts or fishing boats (even better with a portion of salty chips from one of the chip shops opposite). The Albatross sailing ship (one of the oldest sailing ships still afloat, and the last ship to bring a cargo to the harbour) is moored there as a permanent visitor attraction and rather nice restaurant (great pancakes!).
The Standard Inn is now Standard House Chandlery – an emporium of all sorts of equipment and accessories for boating and sailing, from footwear and clothing to outboard engines. You can even buy new and used craft.
Proprietor John Crook (who, along with wife Marion, has run Standard House for over twenty years) is an experienced marine engineer. Consequently, Standard House Chandlery is able to offer storage, maintenance and repair services for all types of inboard or outboard engines.
Whether you’re a keen sailor (or aspire to be one), or simply visiting Wells, a visit to Standard House Chandlery is a great opportunity to experience a little, local feature of maritime history.

Black Sheep Ltd.
9 Penfold Street, Aylsham, Norfolk, NR11 6ET.
Tel: 01263 733142

Found in the historic Market Town of Aylsham, Black Sheep is a fabulous shop selling Men’s and Women’s clothing, accessories and footwear. Stylish, original and of the highest quality, Black Sheep’s varied selection covers everything from nightshirts (yes, the authentic, old-fashioned variety, which I am informed are incredibly popular and comfortable) to outdoor wear designed to compliment and withstand an active lifestyle.
The name ‘Black Sheep’ refers to the own-brand jumpers, jerseys and accessories handmade locally from speciality black, dark and light grey wools. Pure, natural and oiled, these are derived from the Ingworth and Blickling Welsh Mountain Flocks, found here in Norfolk. As well as this lovely knitwear, Black Sheep also stocks beloved and designer brands such as Weird Fish, Mat de Misaine and Keen footwear (hard to find in England, but purported to be one of the best outdoor footwear brands to be found).
Although a trip to the shop itself is ideal, allowing you to browse the full range (which extends to gifts and accessories), Black Sheep also offers you the facility to shop online from the comfort of your own home. With a secure ordering system (and the ability to call the friendly people at Black Sheep if you have any questions or need any help), check out the website and start shopping now!
Open Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm. Sat 10am-5pm.
Closed Sun.
Open Bank Holiday Mondays, but NOT Good Friday.

Conveniently located on the East Quay, just a short distance from the main quay, the pontoons, long term moorings and the Harbour Masters office, Standard House Chandlery has pretty much everything you need when it comes to staying afloat and coming back to shore! Inside you’ll find a huge array of nauticalia, marine products, sailing accessories, footwear and clothing. When we say everything, we mean just that – from clothing by Henri Lloyd and Helly Hanson to a Suzuki outboard engine, you’ll find it here. You’ll even find new and used craft for sale.
Standard House Chandlery also offers a full rigging service, boat repairs and boat and trailer storage – ideal when holidaying in North Norfolk.
The Chandlery building itself is worth a visit purely on its historical merit. In the 18th Century it housed The Royal Standard Inn, a lively haunt frequented by a young Nelson that doubled as the first rural Post Office in Norfolk.
A family business run for over 20 years by John and Marion Crook, Standard House Chandlery is a must-visit destination for anyone with a passion for boats, whether you’re a dedicated sailor with bona fide ‘sea legs’, a holidaymaker sailing on the North Norfolk coast, or simply a fan of the lifestyle who prefers to remain on land.
Clothing brands stocked at Standard House Chandlery include: Musto, Helly Hanson, Henri Lloyd, Joules, Weird Fish, Saint James, original Blues Nautical Knitwear.
The Chandlery is an agent for Suzuki outboard engines and also stocks English Braids ropes, Plastimo and Crewsaver.

(workshop) Drove Orchard Farm, Main Road,
Thornham, Norfolk, PE36 6LS.
Tel: 01485 210 218 / 07860 236 905.
Please telephone first to let us know you’re coming.

Based on the Drove Orchards site at Thornham, Nelson’s County Marine Covers has grown quite spectacularly in the past two and a half years, since it was started by Nicholas Healing from his garden shed! Nowadays, Nelson’s County Marine Covers is known for producing very high quality marine covers and associated products at refreshingly competitive prices.
Items manufactured by Nicholas and his team (which includes his wife, Lucy and experienced seamstress Diane) include bespoke boat covers (made to order to suit your requirements), splash covers, sail covers, and cushions for boats, worked in both canvas and PVC.
Nelson’s County Marine Covers also specialises in sail repairs and cover bags constructed from reclaimed sails. The repair service extends to items of an equestrian nature.
Outside the immediate marine sphere, Nelson’s County Marine Covers makes game bags and also all-weather awnings and umbrellas (the like of which you may see outside some North Norfolk inns!).
Key products by Nelson’s County Marine Covers are the security covers for outboard motors. These can be bought directly from Nelson’s County Marine Covers a swell as through Police forces around the region. The fabric cover, which replaces the motor’s removable cowling protects the engine parts but devalues the motor in the eyes of a thief.
In their own words, Nelson’s County Marine Covers value flexibility and creativity, ensuring that while their items are high quality and functional, they are also fun and make use of the latest manufacturing techniques.
