On the coast road just outside the popular seaside town of Wells next the Sea, and with plenty of parking, Big Blue Sky is a large, airy, stylish store full of impossibly gorgeous things for the home and person. Styled to capture perfectly its coastal position, you can almost feel a sea breeze on your face and smell the salty air as soon as you enter (you may also be greeted by friendly resident Shop Dog, Pebbles, if you are very lucky). Other than only stocking items of sheer loveliness (jewellery, furniture, paintings, bath and body products, toys, games, books, clothing and chocolate), Big Blue Sky is innovative in the fact that all goods come from right here in Norfolk. Most items are carefully sourced from local artists and craftspeople, which, aside from their utter desirability, affords them an inspiring and unique appeal that you cannot find easily elsewhere.
Latest additions to the regularly-changing portfolio of delight include children’s clothes and toys by Made In Mangreen (incorporation of retro and vintage fabrics bring dresses, cushions and accessories bang up to date), paintings by Terry Bestwick (who hails from nearby Blakeney), exquisite hand painted miniature bunting and cards by Norwich-based CeliaBunting and the new collection of beaten silver jewellery by Abbie Conway.
The assortment of goodies in Big Blue Sky ranges from the practical (dry bags for sailing, for example - fully waterproof and in an assortment of colours and sizes ranging from ‘sandwich-size’ to ‘family-size’) to the delicious (locally made Booja-Booja chocolates) to the exclusive (how about the Shop Dog Pebble’s own brand of dog shampoo?). Certainly there is bound to be something that appeals to everyone, making leaving empty-handed a near-on impossibility.
