Sweetpea Cottage

Sweetpea Cottage.
Mundesley, Norfolk.
Tel: 01328 856853 (Kett Country Cottages).
Sweetpea Cottage is a superb holiday cottage set in the centre of the village of Mundesley, on the North Norfolk Coast. It occupies a peaceful location just off Mundesley High Street. Over 100 years old, the cottage has been recently renovated but retains a ‘traditional’ cottage feel, and offers refreshingly spacious and comfortable accommodation throughout.
Sweetpea Cottage sleeps up to 5 people in 3 first floor bedrooms (a Master double, with ensuite, a twin bedroom and a single bedroom). All inclusions, fittings and furnishings are of high quality and have obviously been chosen with care, from the 100% cotton bed linen and thick, fluffy towels to the provision of a welcome ‘starter’ pack of tea, coffee, milk, sugar, condiments, bottle of wine and homemade cake upon arrival. (We have tried said cake. It is very good!).
All mod cons are in situ. The large, fully fitted kitchen has a microwave and washing machine (no dishwasher as yet, but we’re told there will be one shortly), while there is a TV/DVD/Blue Ray in the lounge and a DAB radio with iPod dock in the dining room.
There is plenty of space for the whole family to relax after a hard day enjoying Norfolk. Sweetpea Cottage has a lounge, conservatory and separate dining room (with a table that seats 6).
Outside there is a patio garden with garden furniture and BBQ – perfect for al fresco dining on balmy summer evenings and a small front garden that is quite the sun trap.
Sweetpea Cottage is a retreat for anyone wanting to change pace and get away from it all for a while. It is equipped to a high specification, with guest comfort being a priority.
Off road parking for 2 cars.
No pets are allowed at Sweetpea Cottage.
Tariff from £320 per week.

The White Horse at Brancaster Staithe

The White Horse.
Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk, PE31 8BY.
Tel: 01485 210262.

A 3-star, 2 AA Rosette Inn on the A149 coast road in Brancaster Staithe, The White Horse is undoubtedly one of the best places to stay or dine in the region (corroborated by its inclusion in Alistair Sawday’s Special Places Pubs & Inns of England & Wales 2011).
It is located on an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with some of the most stunning panoramic views across tidal marshes and sandy beaches that you’ll see anywhere in North Norfolk. Sunsets seen from The White Horse terrace (and rises as well if you’re an early bird) are truly dazzling.
A coastal pub built in 1934, The White Horse has been refurbished and tastefully styled with chic, modern décor that perfectly complements its seashore setting. Plenty of natural materials and nautical blues, greys and whites create a calm, welcoming environment.
The White Horse has 15 large en-suite rooms that are uncluttered and contemporary, promoting total relaxation. They are beautifully decorated to reflect the colours of the surrounding seashore environment, with hues of blue, green, lavender and sand.
There are 7 rooms in the main building, including the split level ‘Room At The Top’, which has its own viewing terrace and telescope.
There are 8 rooms on the ground floor, all built into the natural contours of the land, with grass and sedum roofing that blends with the neighbouring marshland. Each has its own outside terrace. One of these has disable access and five are designated ‘Family Rooms’. Dogs are welcome in these rooms.
All rooms feature digital flat-screen TVs and WI-FI.
For dining, the light, airy conservatory restaurant overlooks the Norfolk Coastal Path and the tidal marsh beyond to Scolt Head Island, offering sweeping views. If you want to dine al fresco, the restaurant leads to a sun deck terrace or there is a gorgeously groomed sunken garden.
As if sleeping yards from the sea were not soothing enough, The White Horse can arrange for you to have a relaxing holistic therapy treatment in the comfort and privacy of your room. Fabulous.
Tariffs from around £50 per person, per night, including breakfast. Please visit The White Horse’s own website for further details about special offers and breaks.

East View Farm

East View Farm Holiday Cottages.
Stone Lane, Ashmanhaugh, Norfolk, NR12 8YW.
Tel: 01603 782225 / 07831 258258.

Wonderfully situated to explore the north Norfolk coastal region, the Norfolk Broads and Norwich, East View Farm Holiday Cottages offer a fabulous option for your getaway to Norfolk.
The 4 star / Gold Award (EnjoyEngland) Cottages are set in ten acres of landscaped grounds, just two miles from the village of Wroxham, ‘Capital of the Broads’.
A perfect choice for couples and families alike, each Cottage has a bedroom on the ground floor and all bedrooms in the Cottages are en-suite, offering easy accessibility for all ages.
Plum Tree Cottage sleeps 6 (plus an infant), with 3 bedrooms over two levels. A converted barn, it is open and spacious with beautiful wooden beams and exposed brickwork throughout. Owner Jane Pond has done a marvellous job of furnishing the cottages, which are comfortable and contemporary with an element of ‘country living’ styling. Plum Tree Cottage features its own private patio garden for warmer days and a wood-burning stove for the chillier months. All bedrooms are en-suite, with the two doubles having King-sized beds.
Nutmeg Cottage sleeps 2 (plus an infant), with one bedroom. A converted barn all on one level, this cosy cottage is stunning throughout, from the oak porch and tiled hallway to the King-sized bedroom. It too has its own private south-facing patio garden – perfect for stargazing in the big Norfolk skies.
As you’d expect from such highly regarded accommodation (East View Farm was winner of EDP Tourism in Norfolk Awards 2010 for Best Self Catering Establishment and winner of the Silver Award in the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2011 (the highest accolade for self catering cottages in the UK)), both cottages are spotlessly clean and exceptionally well equipped. They also have free Wi-Fi and access to a huge grass area (perfect for playing and kite flying).
Raising the bar still further when it comes to extraordinary self-catering accommodation, East View Farm Holiday Cottages are recipients of the Green Tourism Gold Award. This coveted honour recognises the Owners’ commitment to sustainability, vital when situated in such a scenic location. For example, the properties are powered by their own wind turbine and the owners have planted over 3000 native trees and shrubs and over 2500 native hedging plants on the site. Even the cleaning products used in the cottages are eco-friendly. Luxury family holidays with a green conscience. We love it.
Our personal favourite element is the private miniature steam railway (the Ashmanhaugh Miniature Light Railway) on site, which has open days at regular intervals throughout the year. What could make a family holiday to Norfolk more perfect?

The Lifeboat Inn

The Lifeboat Inn.
Ship Lane, Thornham, Norfolk, PE36 6LT.
Tel: 01485 512236.

Now part of Marco Pierre Whites Wheeler’s family, the charming Lifeboat Inn at Thornham is a real North Norfolk treasure. Its coastal location provides breathtaking views towards Thornham beach and it is a romantic, rustic and atmospheric escape.
From the cosy smugglers bar lit by hanging oil lanterns to the large fireplace when you first walk in (you’ll have to fight for space in front of it during the winter – often with a few dogs!), the ambience remains faithful to traditional inn-keeping values (after all, The Lifeboat has been receiving guests since the 16th century). Fantastic all year round because its situation is perfect for exploring the North Norfolk coast, as well as taking in golf at nearby Hunstanton, The Lifeboat comes into its own throughout the winter months when it is a snug and inviting bolthole.
All 13 rooms are en-suite, and some offer stunning views over the marshes and Thornham Harbour to the sea.
For dining, there is a lovely walled patio garden and bright conservatory, as well as a more formal dining room. Year-round, the reasonably priced bar menu features local delights and daily specials. Children’s meals are available and there are options for vegetarians.
The Lifeboat bar is popular and often bustling into the evening – a perfect retreat to recover from walks along the beach or from exploring the area.

Dogs are welcome (£8 per dog) and extra beds or cots can be provided for Children.
Free Wi-Fi available throughout.
Plenty of parking is available.

Montague House
Montague House.
3 Montague Road, Sheringham, Norfolk, NR26 8LN.
Tel: 01263 822510.

When fabulous boutique Bed & Breakfast, Montague House opened in Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast, the glamour rating increased dramatically. Now well-established and going from strength to gorgeous strength, the high quality experience and exquisite attention to detail show no signs of abating.
Location-wise, the Sheringham B&B competes with the best holiday lets and hotels, being only a 5-minute walk from the town centre, the railway station and the beach. Step inside though, and you’re in for a treat that is delightfully atypical of the usual seaside accommodation. In fact, if it weren’t for the fresh sea air, and aforementioned proximity to the Norfolk coast, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in some slickly designed London bolthole.
Three individually styled en-suite rooms (The Pink Room, The Garden Room and The Gold Suite) offer luxury and quirkiness in equal measure, with unbelievably comfy beds, sumptuous bedding, original artwork and antique furniture.
The Gold Suite is a whopping 27-feet of space to unwind and incorporates a dressing room, four posted bed and lounging area. As well as an en-suite with power shower, there is also a generous tub.
Each room features a flat screen TV, complimentary individual bottles of wine, chocolates by the Norfolk Truffle Company and bathroom products from Aroma Natural (who also customised bespoke scents for each of the rooms – HOW fabulous?!).
Breakfast is a feast of local produce that incorporates free range and organic choices whenever possible as well as seasonal specialties. Veggies will find plenty to sate them with a fabulous selection of vegetarian breakfast options. View a Typical Breakfast Menu.
All things considered, it is hard to describe Montague House as ‘home from home’, because your home would have to be very, very special to compete!
Room rates – held with no increase for 2012 – are from £100.00 for the Gold Suite or from £80.00 per room for the Pink and Garden Rooms depending on season (please note that there is a 2-night minimum stay in high season).
Montague House cannot accommodate children or pets.

The Black Lion Hotel

The Black Lion Hotel.
Friday Market Place, Little Walsingham, Norfolk, NR22 6DB.
Tel: 01328 820 235.

Under new management since June 2011, The Black Lion Hotel in Walsingham is one of the most fascinating places you could stay, not only in Norfolk, but also in the entire Country.
A hostelry to medieval pilgrims since the 1300s, and one of the oldest houses in Walsingham, The Black Lion is steeped in history, and, subsequently has an alluring atmosphere to match.
Nowadays, The Black Lion Hotel has 7 smartly styled en-suite bedrooms, including one with a 4-Poster Super King bed. All the rooms are unique in their layout and all possess different striking features. Some feature handmade beds, while 3 are walled with the original medieval stone walls, which are wonderfully exposed. Some offer views out onto the Market Place, once a weekly market held by Franciscan Friars from the nearby Priory.
Throughout the hotel you will encounter wonderful architectural details that bear out the hotel’s rich and long history; timber framing and delightful stone detailing is abound.
The northern end of The Black Lion was built to accommodate King Edward III (1327-1377), who made regular pilgrimages to Walsingham. The hotel is actually named after the coat of arms of his wife, Queen Phillipa of Hainault, which was a black lion.
As well as offering a totally matchless experience in terms of accommodation, The Black Lion has a rather formidable restaurant offering all day breakfast, Tapas and A la Carte.
The Black Lion holds regular events, including a quiz on Sunday nights.
Room rates range from £75 a night for a twin or double room to £120 for the 4 Poster Super king room.
The Black Lion Hotel is dog friendly.

The Blakeney Hotel

The Blakeney Hotel.
Blakeney, Norfolk, NR25 7NE.

Winner of the EDP Tourism in Norfolk Award 2010 for Best Hotel.
Just right for total escapism, The AA 3* Blakeney Hotel is situated beside the quay with outstanding views across the estuary to Blakeney Point (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). A traditional, family hotel that prioritises quality and value for money, it is a good base for exploring the wider area (ideal if you like walking, bird watching or want to visit the nearby towns of Holt, Norwich or Aylsham), but equally perfect if all you want to do is kick back, read a paper and gaze out dreamily over the salt marshes.
The Blakeney Hotel boasts over sixty rooms, all furnished to a high standard and some with balconies or terraces offering wonderful views over the estuary and salt marshes. Extra beds or cots for children can be provided and the ground floor rooms are ideal for holidaying dogs.
If you don’t feel like going too far, there is plenty to occupy and delight you within the hotel itself. The Hotel has a heated indoor swimming pool with adjacent Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and air-conditioned mini gym. There is a games room for table tennis, pool and darts and a billiard room with a full-sized table for billiards or snooker. Use of all the leisure facilities is free for residents.
For eating and drinking, the Hotel has two lounges, an AA Rosette restaurant and a bar, offering hearty English breakfasts, light lunches and seasonal À la Carte choices.
Picnic hampers can be made up for residents.
Great for enjoying the whole North Norfolk area, or a getaway destination in itself, The Blakeney Hotel is worth discovering whether you’re planning a romantic break for two, a half-term getaway with the kids or a weekend of walking and exploring with just you and the dog!

Tel: 01425 277134 / 07958 792603 / 07733 104171.

A former railwayman’s cottage in the pretty village of Docking, 4-Star Hollyhocks Cottage is warm and inviting, offering a perfect home-from-home from which to explore the North Norfolk coast and beyond.
Hollyhocks Cottage has been renovated and furnished to a high standard. While it features a wealth of modern luxuries throughout, it still exudes traditional charm.
The cottage sleeps four in two double bedrooms – one with a solid oak double bed and the second with two pine single beds, ideal for children or other guests.
Downstairs there is a spacious open-plan lounge/diner, separated by a half height partition with aspect towards the fully fitted oak finish kitchen. Appliances include a washing machine, electric induction hob, fan assisted oven/grill, microwave & fridge.
Oil-fired central heating and a log flame effect electric fire in the inglenook fireplace make Hollyhocks a perfect bolt hole for Winter getaways in north Norfolk. A secluded suntrap outside, complete with a cast iron bistro table and chairs, is perfect for reading the papers with a cup of coffee – or something chilled – on warmer days.
Docking itself provides easy access to the resorts and beauty spots of North Norfolk. There is an excellent fish and chip shop just minutes from Hollyhocks, while The “Railway Inn” restaurant and pub is a 15-minute stroll away.

Field House
Field House.
Moorgate Road, Hindringham, Norfolk, NR21 0PT.
Tel: 01328 878726.

Field House luxury Bed & Breakfast is a gem of a B&B for so many reasons…
Firstly, its location in the sleepy, rural village of Hindringham is perfect for access to mid- and north-Norfolk, the City of Norwich, and everything in between. It is an ideal base for walkers, birdwatchers or those steeling away for a break in Norfolk, and also perfect for a romantic escape from Norwich or environs if you live here. If you’re planning on visiting Thursford for the Christmas Spectacular, then Field House is literally on the doorstep.
Second, Field House is multi-award winning and can boast (though it is modestly proud, rather than being ‘brash’ about its numerous accolades), among others, being a AA 5 Yellow Stars Highly Commended Guesthouse (the top award from the AA), receiving a Breakfast Award from the AA as well as being one of the first B&Bs to receive the recently introduced VisitEngland Breakfast Award, being holder of the English Tourism Council ‘Gold Award’, being an English Tourism 5 diamond Guesthouse…. you get the idea!
Finally, and this is the reason why Field House has received so many awards, is the extremely high quality of not only the guest house and rooms itself, but also the warm hospitality of The Doltons, who own it. The three rooms are beautifully decorated in a chic but homely style, with superb fixtures, fittings and facilities (including flat-screen TV, DVD player, mini-fridge). Lavender Cottage is a highlight in many respects, being a secluded apartment that is separate from the main house (and accessible to wheelchairs due to its ground floor location). Breakfasts are top quality, prepared with fresh, locally produced ingredients and include delights such as the ‘Norfolk Platter’, local sea-lavender honey with toast and buttermilk blueberry pancakes. Wendy even operates a ‘turn down’ service (the practice of folding back the blanket and sheet of the bed each day so you can just slide in and drift off to dreamland, usually only practised in the finest hotels).
The Sunday Times remarked, “The Doltons should be hired by the government to run a Bed and Breakfast academy”. It’s easy to see why…
Tariffs start at £45 – £55 per person per night.

The area is a haven for birdwatchers and due to so little light pollution, on a clear night you will see millions of stars. Finally, Felbrigg Lodge is wonderful in that, while a hotel, it is not so large that the ‘personal touch’ has been lost; owners DeeDee and Philip go out of their way to ensure your stay is everything you dreamed it would be. In addition to the 7 ‘rooms’ (more appropriately referred to as suites, a cottage and a pavilion – should give you some appreciation of their size), you can also enjoy The Nest – a stunning self-catering Holiday Cottage that sleeps up to 6 people.
Warm but contemporary styling throughout, the spacious Cottage features all you need for a wonderful stay, including
- a fully fitted kitchen with double oven, fridge freezer (with icemaker), dishwasher,
- an open-plan lounge/dining room with ample seating for 6 people
- Sky TV with Sky Sports among many other channels
- washing machine and tumble dryer
- Master bedroom with large en-suite shower room
- 2 x twin bedrooms
- Family bathroom with double sink, shower and bath
The Cottage stands in mature, landscaped grounds, with plenty of opportunity for al-fresco breakfasts on warmer days. If you want a break from cooking yourself, The Ivy Restaurant is only a short stroll away. Here you are welcome to hearty Lodge Breakfasts, Traditional Afternoon Teas and delicious, home-cooked evening meals.
Perhaps you fancy a refreshing dip before breakfast each day or a romantic sunset swim? Felbrigg Lodge has its own 12m private indoor-heated swimming pool, which as guests at The Nest, you are welcome to use.
With its gorgeous far-from-the-madding-crowd situation, Felbrigg Lodge is the ultimate luxury stay. The area is a haven for birdwatchers and due to so little light pollution, on a clear night you will see millions of stars. Finally, Felbrigg Lodge is wonderful in that, though you’ll find pretty much everything you need for an amazing escape there within its grounds, you’re also on the doorstep to all the charms of the North Norfolk Coast or the historical destination City of Norwich.
