Outside Heacham Manor.

Heacham Manor is the only hotel on the North Norfolk Coast with an 18-hole Championship Golf Course. Set within an area of Important Landscape Quality, the vista to be enjoyed here is as good as the golf.

Wonderfully, this new course offers a mix of two distinct characters born from its natural topography. It begins in a parkland style playing up Redgate Hill through established and newly planted trees and soon changes to more of a links style with greater mounding, more shrub planting and raised undulating greens adding to the challenge.

The front nine remains predominately links style with three large lakes to negotiate. The first and second lakes are linked by a winding stream fed from a weir that protects the front of the short par 3 fifth hole. The third and largest lake provides the setting for the signature 7th hole. Also a par 3, the hole requires a well struck shot to carry the 100 yards of water fronting the green.

The next few holes return to a parkland setting with excellent views of The Wash afforded from the 14th tee. The eleventh also incorporates the large lake, which challenges you to take on the green with your second shot.

The 15th plays from an elevated tee down towards the Hotel and in full view of the Lounge Patio and conservatory.

The final 3 holes cross the Heacham River providing a good test at the end of the round. The 18th hole is a reachable par 5, but beware the Ringstead River on the left waiting to catch any errant approaches.

The Course is designed for players of all standards, with the introduction of 5 sets of tee positions. The championship tee will play a course over 7,000 yards whereas the blue junior tees will measure around 5,700 yards.

Looking to brush up or improve? The PGA Professional Ray Stocker is available for individual lessons or golf tuition breaks.

For the future, plans are underway to construct a Heacham Manor Golf Clubhouse and Conference Suite, which will overlook the 18th green and provide further exceptional facilities for players pre and post round.

Hotel guests and non-members are welcome, but if you want to take advantage of the superb facilities on a regular basis, why not take a Heacham Manor Golf Membership? Allowing daily access to the golf course, use of the country club and hotel facilities (with discounted food and drink in the hotel restaurant) and invitations to social events held throughout the year, among other perks, it’s well worth a look.

Outside shot of Standard House Chandlery.

Conveniently located on the East Quay, just a short distance from the main quay, the pontoons, long term moorings and the Harbour Masters office, Standard House Chandlery has pretty much everything you need when it comes to staying afloat and coming back to shore! Inside you’ll find a huge array of nauticalia, marine products, sailing accessories, footwear and clothing. When we say everything, we mean just that – from clothing by Henri Lloyd and Helly Hanson to a Suzuki outboard engine, you’ll find it here. Proprietor John Crook is an experienced marine engineer able to offer storage, maintenance and repair services for all types of inboard or outboard engines. You’ll even find new and used craft for sale.

Standard House Chandlery also offers a full rigging service, boat repairs and boat and trailer storage – ideal when holidaying in North Norfolk.

The Chandlery building itself is worth a visit purely on its historical merit. In the 18th Century it housed The Royal Standard Inn, a lively haunt frequented by a young Nelson that doubled as the first rural Post Office in Norfolk.

A family business run for over 20 years by John and Marion Crook, Standard House Chandlery is a must-visit destination for anyone with a passion for boats, whether you’re a dedicated sailor with bona fide ‘sea legs’, a holidaymaker sailing on the North Norfolk coast, or simply a fan of the lifestyle who prefers to remain on land.

Clothing brands stocked at Standard House Chandlery include: Musto, Helly Hanson, Henri Lloyd, Joules, Weird Fish, Saint James, original Blues Nautical Knitwear.

The Chandlery is an agent for Suzuki outboard engines and also stocks English Braids ropes, Plastimo and Crewsaver.

Founded in 1891, Sheringham Golf Club is a renowned club that has a notable heritage as well as offering outstanding golf. Designed by Tom Dunn, one of the pioneers of British golf course design, the original clubhouse was bought from Harrods. It can now be seen at the Links Golf Club in West Runton, Norfolk.

Location-wise, the course’s position in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on the cliffs overlooking the North Sea offers breathtaking and memorable views. Despite its lovely aspect, Sheringham is a refreshingly challenging 18-hole course, noted for its long par 4 holes (particularly testing when the coastal wind blows).

Sheringham Golf Club has been the venue for the English Ladies’ Championships three times. It was at Sheringham in the 1920’s that Miss Joyce Wethered, who was later to become Lady Heathcote-Amory, and largely regarded as the greatest woman player of her time, won her first championship aged only 18. The 17th Tee is still known today as ‘What Train?’, after Miss Wethered failed to register the 4.20 train out of Sheringham rattling past behind her, such was her concentration on the line of her putt.

Other past members of the club include Robert Falcon Scott (better known as Scott of the Antarctic) and Sherlock Holmes creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Strangely, there was also a member called Moriarty at the club around the same period that Conan Doyle wrote some of his most famous texts. Perhaps it is no coincidence that criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty ended up as Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis…?

Located 320 feet above beautiful sandy beaches between the seaside towns of Cromer and Overstrand and blessed with inspiring views out to sea, Royal Cromer Golf Club offers a suitable challenge to players of all abilities.

Formally opened in 1888, Cromer is one of only 18 Royal Clubs in England (there are only 37 in the entire British Isles). Founding members included the then Prince of Wales as Patron and numerous notable characters have graced the course throughout its history. These include Princesses, Prime Ministers and literary figures such as James Barrie, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Oscar Wilde.

Re-designed in 1891 by Tom Morris (who’s aim was to make Royal Cromer ‘the finest 9 hole golf course in the country’) and subsequently improved by JH Taylor, James Braid, and most recently Frank Pennick, today’s attractive and lovingly maintained 18 hole course is comprised of undulating, gorse-decorated sandy hills entwined with grassy valleys.

Royal Cromer is considered to be one of Norfolk’s finest golf courses. Wonderfully, despite this illustrious honour, and its aristocratic history, the club is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and extends a warm welcome to all visitors.

A Pro-Shop offers everything you could need for your round of golf, while Club Professional Lee Patterson is on hand for advice and private tuition.

Just prior to the original foundation of Royal Cromer, an observation about the North Norfolk Coast (and Cromer in particular) appeared in the London City Press in 1886: “More bracing air and delightful sands are not to be found in any part of England. …Cromer, which bids fair to become the most popular watering place, it being entirely free from objectionable features”. A reflection that still rings true today, surely some of the best golf to be had anywhere must be against this breathtaking natural backdrop on such a celebrated course?

Please visit the Royal Cromer website for up to date information about Green Fees.
