Alysham is located between Norwich and Cromer, off the A140 road.

Aylsham is a typically rural Norfolk market town surrounded by the fields distinctive to the landscapes of Norfolk and Suffolk that were recorded in Constable’s paintings. There are a number of attractions and sites of interest in the area, one in particular being the lovely Blickling Hall, a four-century-old building, with vast beautiful landscaped gardens that is just 1¼ miles outside Aylsham.

The settlement of Aylsham is Saxon in origin, dating back to as far as 500 AD and possibly as far as the Bronze Age. Famous for linen in the 14th century, the town is home to a number of mills and water mills, one being Millgate Mill (also known as Aylsham Watermill). Commerce ended in the 16th century but the Mill is still standing and is a Grade II listed building.

As you would expect, the town is steeped in historical tales, myths and legends, including a few ghost stories. One particular tale tells of a wherryman named William White, who met a gruesome end as he plunged into the Wherry that gave him his employ and met a watery grave. Tales of various spooky happenings surround Blickling Hall too, largely owing to its association with Anne Boleyn, ill-fated second wife of King Henry VIII.

Today, Aylsham is still bustling, with twice weekly markets as well as a regular Farmers Market. The annual Aylsham Show (usually held on the August Bank Holiday Monday) takes place in Blickling Park and is a fairly large-scale agricultural show that attracts a large crowd. The associated ‘Local Food Heroes’ contest is increasingly prestigious among local food and drink producers.

Accommodation-wise, Aylsham offers a selection of traditional inns and welcoming bed and breakfasts.  These, along with a selection of fine eateries and pubs offer the perfect start or end to a visit to this quintessential country town.
